All the thought experiments and SciFi exploration about the dangers of AI and how to possibly restrain it were a complete waste of time. The weak AIs running the social media feeds are already effectively in charge. The engineer who writes them is himself manipulated by them in a self-agitating feedback loop, and, even if he is resistant to it, his boss isn't.
