And my dog can surely count, too. I've been using a kind of scaling rewards, and show numbers with my fingers. "You earned 2 cookie."
And yes, we expect other sapients from other planets to understand even basic math, too. Hell, I think 2+2=4 was even on the Voyager or Pioneer engravings, or something like that. Something that basically said "humans know simple arithmetic."
