He was right. Not only AQ now owns Afghanistan, which it didn't 21 years ago (they were only guests of the Taliban, now they're the same), they're also in the process of conquering the nuclear armed Pakistan and with designs on the Central Asia (starting with Uzbekistan).
Haqqani, whose father came up with the idea of 9/11 in first place, even set up the old idiot Zawahiri to be blown up by the Americans in his (Haqqani's) house in Kabul. Now, The Organization is led by a genius of jihad - with an official Twitter account, and many billions of dollars of the American military investment (also including thousands of special forces and intelligence personnel of the previous government with all their insider knowledge).
And the Americans haven't been been losing any men almost at all, for years, before the support for Afghanistan was cut. Afghan government losses after 2015 have been nearly 1,000 times larger than these of the foreign support personnel and, as he notes, the Americans didn't care at all (and often didn't even know it goes on, as there were less than 2 hours of Afghanistan news on 5 biggest American TV networks combined in half decade). They suddenly "cared" when both Dems and Reps lied to them about how Afghanistan is ready to hold out without these just couple thousand Americans already in the county, droning the baddies and servicing the Afghan aircraft in the completely secure Bagram Airbase. No one was talking about any "more soldiers" for any other purpose, it was all that was needed for the ultimately decided containment strategy to work.
Meanwhile the badly weakened Islamic State is in the process of revival (or "remaining and expanding", as their slogan says), but has shifted its center of gravity to the Black Africa where they thrive. If they ever do merge again, they will be literally unstoppable.
It didn't have to be like that.
The Taliban had already been inching into the former Northern Alliance strongholds which had previously never fallen to them, long before 2021. Perhaps if the Coalition had been a bit more insistent about not tolerating rampant corruption and habitual child rape among the warlords it called allies and partners, this wouldn't have happened, but then if the Coalition did that it may never have found anyone to work with in Afghanistan.
Oh well. I'm quite content not to be sending any form of contribution, either in the blood of my countrymen or my own tax dollars, to prop up a wholly unrepresentative regime of child-raping warlords who exist primarily to give cover to massive human & drug trafficking rings and deny Globohomo's geopolitical enemies strategically positioned territory. It is no surprise to me that the most backward Islamic parts of the world, which consistently demonstrate a high willingness to kill basically anyone who remotely violates the tenets of Islam in any fashion from adultery to blasphemy to apostasy, would want to live under backward Islamist regimes. That isn't something I believe any more Western blood or gold should be spent on withholding, especially when it's obvious that doing so would mandate an indefinite commitment from us.
Defeating globohomo at home and securing our borders (by which I mean the lands of and waters around the Americas) should be our geopolitical priority, not waging forever wars in wastelands on the other side of the planet where the people have already violently resisted the approach of civilization for centuries. To paraphrase the words of the Emperor Honorius to the Romano-British after they propped up a chain of usurpers against him, perhaps the rest of the world ought to start looking to their own defenses.
Also, none of this changes the reality that Tom Nichols is a disgusting chickenhawk who cheerleads for wars and shames others for daring to not want to go die in them or fill his weapon-manufacturing friends' pockets with their money even though he's never been a soldier, any sort of REMF, or probably even ever held a gun in anger once in his life.
Containment was based on holding district centers, military bases (outpost could be estabilished or abandoned), border crossings, and the major routes between all of these. The government held it all by the time Trump released thousands of Taliban prisoners and entered "peace talks" with them. Now they are set to systematically conquer half of the world and attack the rest.
