I'm surprised they published pictures.

Whatever the motive, it cannot be a hate crime.

( A Canadian judge ruled that a Native American woman screaming ''I HATE WHITE PEOPLE'' as she punched a White woman isn't a hate crime. So nothing is a hate crime when some ethnicities do it. )
