I'm all for attacking the single-celled disease organism rather than "higher" organisms that suffer from and carry the disease in question. If they can be prevented from spreading the diseases that cause problems, it's better than literally playing God with entire species that may well have an unseen place in the ecosystem. The human beneficiaries of this will just have to be taught - forcefully, if necessary - that they don't need to have kids in packs any more when all or even most of them aren't dying of malaria and shit.
