It wasn’t woke, sure, but it was cheesy enough make a big platter for all the Frenchmen in the world. There was a passable skeleton of a movie under the bad dialogue, terrible acting, and wonky tonal problems, but the potential never materialized into anything worthwhile.
It kinda felt like a kid telling a silly superhero story from their own juvenile perspective, which is exactly the tone the cheesy opening sets up. I was hoping the opening voiceover was going to be a little tongue in cheek, and after that sequence, you’d get a more serious tone from the kid’s perspective, but no, it stuck with the juvenile writing, dialogue and acting throughout. The whole movie felt like a pre-teen telling the story about how cool their favorite superhero is.
“First he did this cool thing, then POW! He punched the bad guy right in the face, then BAM! He was down. It looked bad for our hero, but not all hope was lost. Get up, big guy, get up!” Okay kid, cool story. The ending even played into that same kid telling you about their favorite comic book vibe, but instead of being charming and endearing, it was just boring and cheesy.
It was like an overly violent kids movie. Too violent to show to your 10 year old, but too silly and poorly written to show to anyone else.
I will say this though. The movie didn’t make me angry the way many modern woke movies do. There was a passable moral to the story, even if it was told poorly, instead of some preachy nonsense identity politics getting shoved down your throat. I managed to get to the end bored, but not disgusted with what I was seeing, so that’s a plus, I guess.
