Because of a knee injury, I've done little but watch TV in the last few weeks. And I found some fantastic stuff that's not woke at all. And they're all from the last year or so:
- Blackbird
- Dark Winds
- The Offer
- The Bear (sort of)
None of these shows had gays or trannies or whatnot. There were a few 'strong female characters', but they were mostly ignorable - except in the case of the Bear, where it detracted a bit from the story.
Dark Winds was astonishing from a woke point of view. It's set on an Indian reservation, but other than one or two verbal barbs that are basically humour, there's nothing about the suffering of the Natives.
I hope this is a wave of the future.
Keep in mind: These aren't necessarily recommendations because of quality, but because no part of them were 'woke' in any meaningful way. I did, however, like all of them.
No.
Ha! Probably the right answer. I wouldn't have watched any of these shows without my injury, but their 'woke' level was about 1980s-level.
Blackbird and the Offer are one-offs. The Bear will almost certainly be season one bait. Dark Winds -- I'm holding out hope! I can't tell you how wonderful it was to watch a Native indian show that was almost entirely about Native indians being Native indians. Of course... they can't go too far into the reality, because glue-sniffing 5 year olds don't make for sympathetic story-telling.
Outlook not-so good.
What channel are they on? I keep wanting to believe a corner has been turned but I’m skeptical. What channel are they on? I think I’ve heard of Dark Winds.
Dark WInds was AMC. It's based on a 1970 novel by Tony Hillerman, so it avoids a bunch of stuff like excessive cell-phone-based plots. It also featured good Native acting and, I'm hoping, presages a wave of Native mythology driven shows. The Nature of the USA is magnificent, and lends itself to a completely different sense of dreaming than Europe. It would be nice to see some version of these dreams before everything is forgotten.
Sounds interesting! I agree about Native entertainment. I will look up the book as well since I’m a huge reader
Have you watched Terminal List with Chris Pratt? I highly recommend it
No surprise to find a television viewer on KotakuInAction2.
I get what you mean... but the show was essentially about movie production, and chicks can actually be quite good at that. There was one character set up as stronk wymon, but she ended up being a prettier version of many women that I've legit met in my life. Another one was even stonker, but she's dismissed within two episodes.
