The thing about Watergate is that the public was less jaded. They were shocked, shocked that information would be gathered in this manner. Today, they'd just get whatever information they wanted -- probably don't need a break in when you can get a court order for it, or the guy will just leak it to you. And they wouldn't display any shame for gathering dirt on a political opponent. Nor would the public be shocked. The difference today is the public knows that crooks are running the place. Perhaps they accept the MSM blinders on the details, but the public does not assume the good character of the people around the President.
