'Spaz' became a slur practically overnight when the BBC decided to put a guy with cerebral palsy on children's TV and introduce him as a spastic.
Children across the country then went to school the following morning and impersonated this guy endlessly, and comparing their classmates to him. That was in 1981. They were still impersonating him over 20 years later when I left the school system. I wouldn't be surprised if they're still impersonating him, with no idea of which individual they're impersonating - as was the case when I was in school.
