If I have a bunch of videos on a hard drive is it possible to view them on my smart TV? It's a Samsung if that's relevant. Ideally I'd be able to make playlists and randomize the episodes, but I don't know if there's a hardware/software solution to what I'm looking to do in the first place. The closest I've been able to get is using an HDMI cable to show my laptop screen on the TV, and the laptop distracts the hell out of me for some reason.

I have a 55" "smart" tv that I use as nothing but a monitor for a home theater PC. It isn't connected to my wireless, and no network jack is plugged into it.
The HTPC is jacked into my home theater receiver via TOSlink optical cable, so I can send digital audio to the receiver and use 5.1 surround if the media supports it.
If I want to watch something, I run VLC on the HTPC to play it. I have a wireless Logitech K320 keyboard, and a wireless X570 trackball mouse. I'm composing this post on my HTPC, actually. I ran 4 network ports to the wall behind where my TV lives, so I can do wired internet. I use wireless only for tablets and my phone, as I'm a wired networking snob. :)
