Superstars in major sports have huge egos. They also do get lots of playing time, but their pure natural ability means they don't have to work as hard as others.
The average/role players on the team OTOH
have to have insane work habits just to make the big leagues because they can't make it on ability alone
have to be well-liked by teammates, coaches and management because their skill level means that if they aren't good in the locker room, the team won't keep them around
are expected not to bitch about playing time or roles or lack of limelight, but to work hard and keep ready to fill in at a moment's noticed when called upon
have to perform well and not fuck up in the specific role and limited opportunities they are given because scrub athletes without intangibles are expendable.
