It's like how native tribes were all different, and affiliated differently with different European ethnic groups. There were some common universal sentiments: the Spanish were psychos, the French were prepared to fully integrate, the Mormons were extremely dangerous, the English were imposing, the Americans were duplicitous, and the Germans were very fair and respectful.
"Our people will make deals with these people, but not those people." becomes a common sentiment.
