Thanks. The document makes it pretty clear that the tighter and more aggressive defense line which predated the rule change provided the resistance necessary for that era's players to develop much strong skill. Why did the NBA change the rules?
Money.
They thought the fans wanted easy highlights and no defense. So they took advantage of the 1998-99 lockout work stoppage and changed the rules to end defense.
No one playing today has ever had to face real resistance. No struggle. No fight.
Surely that lowers the amount of money they could be making by reducing the number of people willing to watch the game....
