Yeah, that's the way these social "sciences" work. A bunch of people make claims about Gamergate, misogyny, racism, etc. and these academics swoop in to capitalize it by "validating" it with a study that amounts to no more than "we started with the premise that this is true and what do you know, we found that it is?" Finally, the people who "inspired" the study with their claims cite the study as proof.
It's like the citogenesis prevalent on wikipedia, but it's straight from tumblrite exiles on twitter, through grievance studies journals, back onto twitter.
