I personally think that it was a mistake for England to surrender Hong Kong to China in 1997. The agreement was signed with the Qing Dynasty in 1898 and England could/should have argued that it was no longer valid.
The West should have already seen the threat China was becoming and not done them any favors.
Not just a mistake, but a failure and betrayal on the part of QE2. The surrender was done under terms that called for protecting HK human rights for a set period, which China has violated. The deal is forfeit and the UK should take it back.
