In fairness, the South already invaded Kansas years prior, and was already going to secede because the Republicans were going to rescind the Fugitive Slave Law, which was a major violation of the free state's state's rights.
The house was never going to stand. Either Lincoln was going to invade to preserve the Union, or the South was going to shoot it's way out and expand the institution of Slavery west.
The fact that even after the Confederacy fell, confederates still managed to invade foreign countries and overthrow governments shows that no one was committed to peace or the law.
