Not to mention the grid would collapse if we merely doubled electric cars. Replace all of the combustion engines? Now I know you’re fucking with me.
If the electrification was preceded by an "expanding and upgrading the grid and investing in nuclear"-type message, all this :saving the planet" posturing would've been more believable.
As it is this just seems like a money scheme, manufacturers see a public opinion shift and decide to cash in, especially huge groups like VW with a reputation stained by their emissions cheating. Some only make an electric to drag down their average emissions across their fleet. And besides battery production being everything but clean, China is making money on this, so a lose-lose situation.
If they actually wanted to go clean(er) , hydrogen would've been the logical option. Besides using oil or gas to make it, you could use water and electricity (nuclear would come in handy) but i guess there's less money in that...
Hydrogen is terrible. About a third the end to end efficiency of electric, and you pay at the pump just like gas.
