I hate when they say queer characters aren’t political. It gets political when you massively over represent a population and double down on it despite clear evidence it doesn’t sell. Same with pushing a black character on the basis they are black and using character to push the racism narrative.
Or perhaps we can look at constantly gender swapping or pushing women into traditionally male hobbies or genres and attacking criticism as sexist.
Tokenism has always been tacky at best. In most cases, it was used as a writing foil having the character play up to racist stereotypes for the purpose of keeping the audience familiar despite telling a story with unfamiliar characters and a potentially confusing plot.
