NATO is certainly a stabilizing force for its members. But that's mostly because it prevents intra-alliance tensions, rather than protection from the outside. The reason France is not threatened by Germany's re-armament is NATO, otherwise the security dilemma would wreak havoc.

If France left NATO again (they have in the past), things would become very interesting. And they really should given what's happening.
I believe they only left the centralized command, and not the alliance itself.
