I think Handmaid's Tale must be history's greatest litmus test for being an NPC. Not Harry Potter, not Star Wars, not even Marvel. None of them even compare to Handmaid's Tale for the dumbest audience ever amassed by a work of fiction.

If someone makes a Handmaid's Tale reference, just call them a retard to their face and stop talking to them. Unless it's to make fun of them. Then by all means do that.
