The feds launch an investigation and lack the ability to prove the underlying charge, but if anything you said to a federal officer was not true/correct they can charge you with lying. That's all they were able to convict Martha Stewart on in their insider trading investigation for example. The correct answer is to refuse to speak to law enforcement for any reason, and if you have to say something, do it through an attorney.
