They are exposed to extreme hots and colds, background cosmic radiations that would bleach clothing faster than anything left out in the sun on Earth, as well as other extreme conditions that would burn, melt, freeze, tear, disintegrate, and generally ruin any normal piece of material faster than Uncle Ben dying in a Spider-Man origin story.
Unless, and this is actually worse, the material it gets made from is specially requisitioned to be indestructible when such materials would be far better put to use saving lives rather than sending a topical political message.
