Not really, all you have to do it put a Web shortcut on your phone and you have twitter. The app store is completely and utterly superfluous at this point. People just haven't figured it out.
Another option is competitive appstores. I already use F-Droid for most of my app downloads, because most of the apps I use are open source. Naturally that specific store might not appeal to everyone, there is a vacuum forming in the Android app market.
Or apps become worthless.
Apple and Google have been censoring so much, at some point they'll reach critical mass and people get used to using the browser.
