Musk doesn't care about the watermelons. Everything he does is in service to the short term goal of making money and the long term goal of going to Mars. Tesla is building the backbone of electric heavy duty vehicles. His solar panels are meant to power the mission. Starlink is testing orbital communication.
SpaceX is essentially a government contractor for NASA
Just adding to what MassivePecorino said, while NASA is their most important customer for now, a key feature of SpaceX that separates it from previous space ventures is that they never wanted the government to be their sole customer, or to simply be a contractor. Musk knew they would need to greatly expand the market to be sustainable. If Congress cancels the SLS, that's it for Boeing. If Congress cancels Lunar Starship, he is still going to keep the project going by any means necessary. Agree 100% with everything else you said.
If Google had fanboy shills crowing about how Google is great for the environment, Google would make them front-page search results for anything even loosely related. "Need" = nothing.

Because tesla has fanboy shills to sell the cars. and free media pieces about 'saving' the environment. They dont need to put it in ads.
