Toleration of homosexuality was an olive branch intended to preserve some semblance of social harmony. What we got back is that olive branch sharpened into a point and stuck into our collective eye.

The slippery slope may be a logical fallacy in written arguments, but it is absolutely a factor in changing social norms.
