Which didn't happen, so why do you talk about this being a "problem" in this case?
All of civilian death tolll from all causes among all populations, including 298 who fell from MH17, totalled only over 3,300 in nearly 8 years.
Almost all of these during the heavy fighting in 2014-2015 when both sides used artillery extensively, and then almost no one afterwards when it was just low level warfare in the WWI style trenches dug in the long depopulated areas (sniper activity, ATGM strikes, mortar and occasional arty fire directed on each other trenches, vehicles, bases).
Most civ deaths on both sides after 2015 were just from old mines and unexploded ordnance. And even these were as low as 1 or 2 a month during the last few years, because there's been clearance during the previous years.
But since the Special Operation began only a month and half ago, it's very likely there's been thousands of dead civs in just Mariupol city. Many of them ethnic Russians, too.
In Grozny 1994-1995, the Russians actually killed mostly ethnic Russians (and mostly elderly, too). Many thousands of them, and disproportionately to their share in the population of Chechnya. Today, practically no Russians (or Christians) reside in Putin's Chechnya, other than soldiers strictly confined to their bases. They ethnically cleansed themselves in absolute terms and then declared it a great victory.
If you find anything incorrect in my statement, don't be shy and tell me.
This was a mic drop moment. I have a feeling the amount of salt mined after this will be wholesome and very satisfying.
