Bell Hooks explained it perfectly in one of the replies. For this man, queerness is a codification of his narcissism. He pathologically rebels against every Darwinian norm surrounding him. Because he must feel special, unique, and better than the people around him, but he has no talent or competence that affords him such a pedestal. So he self-identifies as something exotic in order to attain the status otherwise denied him by virtue of his mediocrity. He’s no different than an edgy teenager discovering nihilism and suddenly deciding everyone else is stupid.
