Not to mention if people don't see any value in the trading currency they just wont use it. You'd need an oppressive law that prevents people from trading their own currencies.

Then the local currency (which, unless you've taken all your money out as cash before the Big Blackout EMP) will be nothing more than a yardstick with which we'll use to gauge how many chickens equals a goat and how many goats equal a cow, and how many hours of labour equals a bowl of food.
