Yes. WWII everyone new what it was about. At every level they knew that they were making content to keep up morale and support for the war and war effort.
Did the war propagandists of the past understand what they were doing? Of course those at the top did, but did the line reporters?
If not then they are no different: just the "useful idiots" of our day.
