I think they're actually being honest here. Everything's been done before and done better. Watching old Johnny Carson reruns is a better, more enjoyable, more wholesome experience than watching new episodes of Colbert. Hollywood will never make a better Terminator, Ghostbusters, or Groundhog day.
So part of this cultural rot is that the only audience left to sell to are the freaks and fanatics that were rightly shunned in film for the first hundred years.
For instance, this is why Sesame Street sucks now - because unless you're grooming your kid to be a freak there's no reason not to just watch the decades of old episodes.
I don’t want to know.
