Even if you have skilled people, which I guess this guy is at least, of all these randoms going there to "help" is there even enough organization to make a difference? It's not a video game and a bunch of one man armies isn't going to win. They'd need leadership and strategy to make a difference.

I assume a sniper is a lot safer then a foot soldier. So he has that going for him. He could make a difference, who knows, every war has heroes.
