My question on this topic - are the breaches caused by internal failures or massive external force?
Are they incompetent/malicious in how they handle data? I'm not a data expert (far from it) , but surely storing names and addresses in plain text is ill advised. It's not like GiveSendGo was actually sending something to these people for donating, they didn't need to keep the information past payment verification.
Gab was also breached, but IIRC, the breach was given to a website that only allowed you to see it if you were in it.
Torba of course denied wrongdoing and said the data was fake. Nothing came of the whole incident so his reputation survived.
I did see other commenters talk about lax security before the doxx happened at GSG though.
One poster claimed he tried to donate on the site and was already logged in as a random user that had previously donated and had access to their details.
I had a feeling this would happen. That's why I didn't donate.
I'm not sure if it was because of malice or because GiveSendGo wasn't really understanding what they were doing, their eyes just lighting up at the thought of all the traffic and funds they would get.
Before the convoy, who had actually heard of them?
They didn't just bite off more than they could chew. They walked into a war holding a butter knife while choking.
You cannot get into things with literal governmental attention without being prepared for the absolute worst. They thought the enemy would fight fair.
Of all of the tens of millions of dollars crowdfunded, only 13,000 Canadian dollars ever made it into a trucker's fuel tank according to the organizers.

I lack the expertise to make an informed guess.

Governments and courts hold on to the rest.
Should have used cryptocurrencies.
