You don't do wrongdoers a favor by letting them off easy. For their sake, they need atonement. Punishment is the beginning of rehabilitation.
This. Someone who is genuinely remorseful will actually be happy they were appropriately punished. They know they deserved it. But the remorse often doesn't manifest until during or after the punishment when they've had time to reflect.
