It's a fairy tale, so I thought they were fantasy dwarfs. Spelling doesn't matter. I've seen it both ways in fantasy.

I'm pretty sure the proper English plural is dwarves. It's just that Tolkien had a thing about spelling it differently. Some people have followed his lead on that. Not everyone.
