As ever, I think the biggest difference is reach, not magnitude. Most people aren't engaged in politics. I'm only here because gamergate invaded my gaming hobby, otherwise I would still not give a shit about politics to this day; I might not even have been reading the news. 90%+ people haven't been paying attention, but Partygate extended into the mainstream consciousness, so even the covidiots can't ignore it.
