Sounds like the cunts who owned her were using it like a prop to suck money for their own purposes and are only sad that their meal ticket can't provide but 1 more meal before gone forever.
"Please, help us rescue it for restoration, and totally not for selling the shit for parts!" shakes donation can
You should see the comments on their Facebook page! People, uhh, aren't happy, to say the least... Lol.
The whole thing stinks (probably literally, too). Reads like a complete tale of mismanagement, and, as you say, potential fraud/embezzlement, too...
Which is sad. I would say, "at least they tried", but their behaviour in the last... Couple of years, from what I read, suggests they damn well didn't try hard enough, if nothing else. To say the very, very least...
Sadly pretty much the exact same thing is happening with two other heritage vessels, atm, one in South Australia, one in Tasmania. It just seems to be the way, here, very unfortunately...
I hate to be the "muh government intervention" guy, but the only times I really know of this having worked, on big ships, is with actual Maritime Museums, which receive government funding, and of which each Aus state has one...
I didn't think to say this before, but it's rather appalling that state governments in Aus are more than happy to pay 10s of millions of dollars to "rebuild" elite sports stadiums, and arts venues, which, in the vast majority of cases, will never be used at the community level, or by actual local sports groups, and yet, they will almost never put money towards saving a community icon like this...
It's fucking sad.
On the embezzlement thing, though, it's the same with the Anglican (Episcopalian, for some of you) Church, where I am, right...
Child abuse royal commission = millions in compensation claims. So what does the Church do..? Sells off hundreds, literally hundreds, of community churches across the state. Many of which are the only church in those communities... :-/
People in those communities, naturally, don't appreciate that very much. So they complain to the archbishop, who calls them "meddlers and wreckers", and calls for them to be booted out of the Church...
Then guess what? He starts a fundraising campaign to work on restoring the cathedral, in the capital city, and then it turns out that this is where the Church spent all that money. Millions. On restoring their fucking cathedral... Amazing.
It's disgusting, yet because it suits property developers, who are the real powerbrokers here, he is still in charge. And the media loves it, because it means a) less churches in the community, b) another fucking scandal in the church, and c) more available, notably nice historic properties for their rich mates...
Amazing. I already pointed out how the same has already happened to the RSL, and other community clubs, here. Well, this is the next step...
Australia, becoming more and more like Maoist China every fucking day. :-(

Yep, yep, sadly you may very well be right...
