Yep. Path of least resistance. Same reason it takes about five minutes after a dictator is installed for the overwhelming majority to happily assist the regime in slaughtering its own civilians. It's easy to be a traitor, it's hard to be a hero. Most people have no actual morals or ideals, they just don't want to be forced to think. Whoever promises a life of brainless docility is who the people will follow.
