Meanwhile at lunch with my co-workers:
Them: "I loved episode 495 of that anime where the protagonist finally got the legendary 3rd piece of the magic crystal after rescuing the Puffin King! And their pet snowman was soooooooo adorable!!!"
Me: "Did you know that in the late 1800's people in the southern U.S. would have steamboat races for fun? And that the competitors were so proud and intent on winning that they would overload the boilers to the point of them potentially exploding and killing over half the people on the ship?"
Them: "...wtf..."
Me: "I could tell you more about the culture of the south and how it was shaped by immigration during that era. You might learn something you'll never glean from Reddit."
Them: "...no..."
If you've got the time, I'd love to hear about that! Interesting stuff about the South like that tended to get left out of the history classes I took in favor of "Reee, KKK bad".
They've fucking killed history too. The amazing thing is you can stick your head into any area of life and find where the progressives have fucking shit it up.
The parent of a friend of my son went on and on about having a history degree and slavery was the only cause of succession. If you search for "Morrill tariff" you'll find tons of identical articles stating that the tariff only passed because states seceded therefore it couldn't be the reason for secession. It's half true in a magic trick sort of way. It only passed in the session it did because of the states seceding but the Republicans had picked up several Senate seats plus two seats for Oregon which had just become a state so it would have passed the next session easily so anticipating this the states seceded.
And there's just a million little things like this. You could spend your entire life chipping away at it and you'd never make a dent.
Its a fact you cant convince a good poor white southerner to finish mowing the lawn after he is halfway through it on a day he took off work just to mow it. Out of pure spite and stubbornness he will not only refuse to finish whats left and let it grow over half his property. Yet you are trying to tell me this same mindset and stubbornness WALKED to Pennsylvania to fight and die for a rich dude whom he hated more than he hated blacks ability to keep slaves? For confederate currency that wasnt worth tissue paper? And even if he won, what was his reward? For the rich to keep slaves and it give him nothing at all?
Why? Because he got off on the fact a nearly insignificant portion of slaves got whipped? Something doesn't add up.
