basically, the game is censored but the uncensored patch comes as a free DLC so one can go around Paypal prudors. the patch is on GoG aswell and not on the website of the game makers like it use to be for steam

This was in the context of rule 34 art, but the same principle applies if someone likes a studio or something. Or maybe a site is dedicated to a hard to find kink and they pay to support it or because it's easier to just pay for it than to find pirate versions of it. In that sense it's a bit like Steam for games. Sure, you could pirate it for free, but Steam makes it so much easier to just pay for it.
