It is, and they're not the only ones. Metapcs.com (who I've known of for some time due to their advertising with twitter shitposter rickyberwick) have said they want 20 million for the name.
Who the fuck wants to be in a VR world ran by facebook? The fuck? It confuses me. What those sjw assholes can get away in this metaverse will seem tame in real life.
They're far too arrogant to realize that people won't want it. Their estimation of the power of their control is extremely overinflated because they imagine that deceiving people is the same thing as controlling them. Their entire world view seems to elevate deception as if it were some sort of god-tier super power so they can claim personal responsibility for things that happen without their involvement. An entire world in which nothing at all happens without their involvement will be a spectacular failure, and hopefully a sobering reality check.
Metacompany appears to have folded several years ago.
It's unclear what legal rights they may still retain though. Will be interesting to see if this has any legs.
You can search for trademarks on https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=login&p_lang=english&p_d=trmk (can't link to trademarks directly because of their shitty 1990s system)
They do own the trademark MetaCompany. Didn't bother searching if they own any shorter trademarks because there are so many meta trademarks and the USPTO site belongs in a museum.
I just posted it on Facebook. Lets see what happens.
