If their shareholders haven't compelled them to force Marvel and DC to change direction yet, despite the fact that both are at this point essentially bottomless money pits, then clearly the money isn't a factor.
No, businesses are still all about short-term profits, but they have pet PR projects that they are willing to waste money on. At the same time they are handing out pink slips like candy to those not involved in those pet projects and outsourcing as much as possible to India/China in order to make up for those losses. They raid pension funds and cut benefits of the cogs in the machine in order to create “profitable” business quarters.
The government don't need to fund them when megacorps like Disney and WB have exactly the same agenda.
