Sowell comes off as a closet segregationist when you read between the lines. He is closer to defending the antebellum South's conception of liberalism than typical conservativism.
You think so? I always thought he believed individuals should be able to associate with who they want and judge by content of character. Which is pretty much what I think. I know he is against the “anti-racist” nonsense. I have seen him attacked as a white supremacist
Freedom to associate implies the freedom to self-segregate. He's definetely against forced integration and generally frowns on the civil rights activists. It's the same intellectual heritage as Booker T Washington, who brokered the Atlanta compromise.
In a true free society people have the right to self segregate. So I think people should have the right to voluntarily integrate or segregate as they choose. But I see what you mean now. I am a fan of Booker T Washington as well. I have friends of different races although as I’ve gotten older I notice my friends are more traditional/right of center so I guess I segregate in that sense.
I think the government should have equal opportunity but like you said private individuals should have free association
I thought of that quote because I’ve seen my young cousins think they are fighting for something by holding up a sign condemning racism. But you are right. I firmly believe that stirring up racial strife and the destruction we saw during protests does help the ruling class.
Interesting points you are making. Thanks for commenting. I enjoy Sowell’s work but you do make good points.
I thought Sowell was a libertarian? At least I'm pretty sure he doesn't support "the system" as it exists today.
Yea I would think Sowell is a right leaning libertarian
