This is just the OLED thing right, so a bigger screen? Maybe people will get tired of their original ones and dump them off on the cheap. I was thinking about trying to get a Switch next year some time, but I don't care about the handheld at all, and if I understand correctly I should just get an old Switch instead in that case. Trying to play a modern game with complicated controls in my hands with itsy bitsy buttons while holding a heavy device is not for me.

The first few generations of the switch can be hacked to play ROMs or patch games. Definitely get an older one if at all possible.

its oled, they changed the hinge mechanism (now it runs down the WHOLE back instead of just a tiny one) its a little more power hungry display, but the system was tweaked to have the same battery life as the smaller switch, they doubled the internal storage, they added a lan port to the stand (which was an extra 20-30 without it, afaik) and it works with all your same peripherals. Some people have guessed that the speakers might have a slight upgrade. it costs $50 more than the regular one.

here's an archived pic of the new hinge

it's not very heavy when you're gamin on it, it feels about the same as the big xbox controller for the ogbox, but with better ergonomics with the smaller form factor. actually it might be closer to the weight of a 360 controller, I havent consolled in a while. it's pretty effortless to game on. but if youre only going to use the tv, yes, just get an old one and never unplug it. the benefits there are the new dock's built in lan, and the doubled memory if you download a lot of games. the other upgrades are mostly helpful for mobile play.

There are also a few brands of controllers you can use for the plugged in mode.

Yeah, I'll give it another year or two and see what they come up with next. By then will have a list of 10 or 15 games I want that I can't play on anything else with Bayonetta 3 and the new Zelda game etc. If whatever they do next is kinda cool I might switch to Nintendo, otherwise, there will be a zillion of them on the used market at some point. I'm not even slightly a serious handheld gamer, but I swapped my DS I didn't like that much for a GBA that I modded earlier this year and it's perfect for me. Easy controls, lots of games I like, and I can be guaranteed it doesn't complain about not having an internet connection.

My guess is that we might see a 'pro' II in 1.5-3 years from now, but with the chip shortage, you might need to add another 3/4 year on to it. I dont think theres a need for a more powerful switch, the biggest upgrade would be a larger battery, or more efficient cpu. There are a bunch on ebay atm (10 pages when i looked). seems like 200-250 for a regular switch, and around 180 for a mini. did you have to mod it with a custom chip, or a romhack, or a china kart? and was it modded for new games or does it run faster or something else> No switch games complain about an internet connection, the sole exception is the 2k games which are DL required and have red bars on top (of the coverart). *its been a long time since ive looked at those, its actually a large white bar. ay. Every game without that can be enjoyed as soon as you pop it in your console ;) 👌

I just modded the screen to have a modern backlit LCD, glass lens on it, and replaced the case and buttons. Not all that hard, although I might do the speaker improvement mod later. I use an Everdrive X5 cartridge, it runs ROMs off an SD card. No hacks to the hardware required for that.
