He probably just happened to be an addict who always wanted to have his dick cut off. From what I've seen, transexuals, like all these other rebellious counter-culture types, tend to lean heavily into drug abuse. So much so that most trans murders aren't so much cases of "death by transphobe," they're more akin to "death by drug deal gone bad." Or "death by fellow addict."
