Those characters didn't enter the public consciousness outside of the top 5% of superfans. Now look at the Mandalorian. Everyone's constantly talking about it. It's the biggest thing to happen to Star Wars since Episode III. That's how you gauge interest in media: you see how much of an impact it had on the culture. Episodes 7-9 had none.
People do push back against this thing, but they do it quietly. They do it by simply not caring any more. They're not going to riot on the streets or write angry social media posts. They're just going to change the channel, because that's all they need to do.
