Is there some journalists style guide to how to sell Covid? I notice subtle things like this a lot.

Battle? I myself and quite a few I know have had the WuFlu. A very small number of them have gone through anything I'd call a battle. Yet these journalists always push it off as something like that. My "battle" was laying around pretending to be a Democrat. Slept in, didn't do shit for a day. Wow, what a heroic effort. When do I get my Covidian Medal of Honor?
