That's not a great comparison. Static and Brownian motion would capture some particles, even very small ones because at that scale it's more like a forest than a fence. The actual reason masks don't work is because the particles are so small that they have very little momentum and therefore go with the flow and the air flow takes the path of least resistance which is around the mask.
