I saw something posted a while ago that theorised it's because many are millenial NEETs [possibly autistic] that were easily swayed/groomed in some desperate attempt to have somewhere to fit in.

Because of the much wider reach online communication grants compared to 20 years ago and beyond this means extreme minority groups can find one another when originally they would have been so isolated they may rarely, if ever, interact with another of their group.

As they are NEETs by definition they have all the time in the world to immerse themselves in online groups and eventually beat out others through sheer autistic perseverance to rise to positions of moderation.
