In the US revolution, I've read only about 10% of the population actually participated. Many civilians fled to Canada. Of those who stayed, who is to say they really wanted the new government vs. the Crown or something else, but were too afraid of social pressure and the militia to say anything?
Before that, literally every society and country in the world was created by military conquest. (or negotiations between kingdoms) It amused me that anyone was surprised China was so fast to recognize the Taliban. Why wouldn't they? Mandate of heaven (conquest) is the only way they've ever changed governments too.
