So does that make the Rape of Nanking justified? What about all the non-white civilians killed during the Philippine campaign or the seiges of Hong Kong and Singapore? How about the Bataan Death March? Unit 731? Comfort women?
Japanese military forces also raped and killed tens of thousands of Chinese citizens after the United States bombed Tokyo in April of 1942.
Why did they do it?
Because the US planes that bombed Tokyo didn't have enough fuel to turn around so they flew onwards to land in China. Most or all of the US pilots couldn't locate the landing strip in China they were supposed to use to refuel and then fly to friendlier territory, and so they ended up bailing from their planes.
Some of those pilots were taken in by Chinese farmers who then contacted Chinese militia (or guerilla fighters, I can't remember exactly) who could smuggle the American pilots out of the country.
Japanese forces didn't care if they found you hiding an American pilot or not. They acted as if everyone was in on it, and they raped and murdered tens of thousands of men, women and children.
Thanks, I had forgotten the fallout from the Doolittle Raid.
